Intelsat Faces Restructure Calls
WASHINGTON, DC, USA, 96/08/12 (TS) -- In the United States support is
mounting for a restructuring on Intelsat and Inmarsat after the General
Accounting Office (GAO) released a report calling for such a move.

Almost immediately many of Intelsat's competitors announced support for
the report, and US politicians have pledged to push for reform legislation.

The goal of many is a partially commercialised Intelsat that will compete
with other satellite operators on a level playing field rather than the
present state. Intelsat is owned by national telecom providers in 139
countries around the world and companies wishing to use Intelsat must deal
with the telcos rather than the organization itself.

If change comes it could come slowly. Intelsat is the world's largest
satellite operator. Its satellites carry more than half of all international
telephone calls.
