And now the news:

---------- ABSAT ON ASTRA
The French digital pay-tv service, AB Sat, has recently appeared in
MPEG-2/mediaguard-viaccess, on Astra 1F. The package can be found on
12,266 H, and is exactly the same as the service which can be found on
Eutelsat II-F1, 11,678 H. Existing AB Sat subscribers should be able to
tune into this service successfully. The aim of this appearance on Astra
is currently unknown - the package is currently remaining on Eutelsat
II-F1 as well. It is possible that AB Sat is switching to Astra to catch
more viewers - it is currently a long way behind Canal Satellite
Numerique (CSN) in terms of audience figures. By simulcasting, or
perhaps only broadasting, from 19,2 degrees east, the current home of
CSN, it is bound to pick up many more subscribers, mostly existing CSN
subbies.

---------- ZOMER TV TO CHANGE NAME
As from the 1st January, 1998, Zomer TV will officially change its name.
The Dutch commercial channel currently broadcasts from 20.00 to 00.00
everyday on Astra 1D transponder 58: 10,847 V, after the Computer
Channel. The Channel is broadcast under the official name of Zomer TV
(Summer TV), but with winter approaching, this seems quite
inappropriate. Zomer TV has been continuously displaying its familiar
ident in the top left hand corner since its start, but this logo itself
reads Wereldomroep (World Broadcast). Starting next year, Zomer TV will
change its name to Wereldomroep TV, to match this ident. Programming
should remain unchanged.

---------- FEEDS ON TELECOM 2A
As many motorized dish owners will have noticed, many channels are
quickly disappearing on the Telecom satellites. All four satellites (2C
at 3 east; 2B and 2D at 5 west; 2A at 8 west) have at least one
transponder not in regular use! In the case of Telecom 2D, all
transponders are only in occasional use for feeds - the remainder of the
time, we are graced with the presence of the familiar France Telecom
test card.
Telecom 2A has now jumped on the feeds bandwagon, as one was spotted the
other day, in PAL/clear.
With the Telecom satellites still at such a young age, one wonders if
there is not so much demand for analogue TV in France any more. Already
some of the major pay-tv channels have left, such as Cine Cinemas (on
TC2A) and LCI - La Chaine Info, with many more (including TMC, RTL 9,
Canal Plus) scheduled to leave soon. If you take a look at Canal Plus'
SECAM transmission on 2A, you'll notice some very weird pictures - the
nagravision/syster encryption does not seem to be taking place
correctly.
It would appear that the future of the Telecom satellites might be in
jeopardy...

I'd just like to remind all those people who are interested in the
complete satellite listings for the UK spectrum, but can't utilize the
web service, that there is still the comprehensive mailing list service,
Sat-UK-Tab, which delivers the text versions of all of the covered
satellites every week. Each day is dedicated to a different target area,
with simple yet useful listings. To subscribe, send mail to
sat-uk-tab-request@tags1.dn.net, with the word SUBSCRIBE in the body of
the mail.
