MTV Announces M2
NEW YORK, New York, USA, 96/07/08 (TS) -- MTV Networks announced Monday a
new channel that will take MTV back to its roots. Confirming industry
speculation of over a month, the channel said M2 will concentrate on music
videos. Many critics of MTV say the channel spends too much time on news,
game shows, documentaries and sports that music these days.

It will be launched on August 1 in the USA and faces a battle getting onto
the nation's cable systems which are already packed to capacity. Owner
Viacom's other channels, MTV, VH-1, Nickelodeon, Nick at Nite, TV Land, and
Showtime Networks could be used as part of a deal to encourage cable
operators to place M2 on their networks.

There are no announcements regarding moving M2 to other regions. In Europe
MTV has suffered loss of audience to channels such as Viva and MCM which
offer more non-stop music than the US cult channel.
