From John Donkersley

- ADVICE ON NOKIA 16:9:

Chris Howell wanted advice on the 16:9 Nokia he'd just bought.

I've got an earlier Nokia 16:9 (no 14:9!) - I presume that some
of it is similar and that it is PAL PLUS.

1. 16:9 works when there is a MAC 16:9 broadcast - try France
Supervision on 8 deg west if you have a multi-satellite set up.
This works to stretch the picture left and right, crudely speaking,
but keeps the same line definition.

2. 16:9 with MCM is, I think, in Pal-Plus. With Pal-plus the 'letterbox'
in the middle gets blown up to fit the full screen (as per zoom.
Normally this would mean that the 300 or whatever middle lines (?)
would simply be bigger and there would not be any increase in
definition (as with standard 4:3 zoom). However, Pal-Plus sends
helper signals in the black lines above and below the 'letterbox'
picture. Your set then uses these to imcrease the number of
lines in the 16:9 picture giving it higher definition.

So, Bob's your uncle, and you have a better picture.

If anybody knows a cheap source for a Nokia add on box for Pal-Plus,
please let me know - as I'd like to have the facility myself.

Good viewing.
