Since the footprint of Astra 1G was published, owners of
0.6m dishes pointed to Astras 1E and 1F had to worry
a lot. The new bird lacks the so called "Moscow Beam",
which made digital reception in Moscow possible
with just a 0.6m dish. Analogue tests of Astra 1G
were not a piece of good news, too - they were as
strong as most signals of Astra 1D here. The satellite
started working regularly, channels started to move
arround or just switch to the beam of the new Astra
bird. While owners of satellite dishes in Spain started
to shout out loud about their joy of reception
horizontally-polarized digital channels from 19.2 East,
Moscowites started to try guessing what will leave
from their eyesight to an unrecieveable bird.
But everything turned out not to be so bad. Famous
Cartoon Network/Travel/CNN package on 11.837 H,
which switched on Astra 1G, is still recieveable
on 1.6-1.8m dishes, while Canal Satellite Digital
package on 12.581 V (!) turned out to be much
more strong - 1.5m is more then enough.
Using my equipment (Jonsa 2.4m dish - in Ku-band works
like 1.5m, California Amplifier 0.7dB Full Band LNB,
Ferrite Polarizer and a Nokia D-box with Dream 5.2
software), I was also able to recieve German packages,
which recently moved to Astra 1G. But for these
packages I had to set the polarity really exact, which
required a lot of work with my ferrite polarizer.
Reception quality is as follows:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Package Freq. Polarizer Signal strength Reception
                                    setup (RS Error Display) quality
-----------------------------------------------------------
Astra
Service 11.837H -3 68 Clear
CSD 12.581V +28 83 Clear
ARD 12.603H +66 69 Rare dropouts
ZDF 12.662H +66 59 Continious dropouts
ARD 12.722H -48 69 Clear
-----------------------------------------------------------

So, if you live in Moscow and have a 2.0m dish, you do not have
to install anything else to recieve Astra 1G in perfect quality.
But if all other transponders, which are to be switched on shortly,
will be as strong as 12.581 V and 12.722 H, 1.5m will be just
enough.
