MARTIJN SANDERS NIEUWE VOORZITTER AVRO?
Martijn Sanders wordt op 4 juli voorgedragen tot
voorzitter van de AVRO. De vorige voorzitter,
Gerard Wallis de Vries ging zes maanden geleden
met vervroeg pensioen. Opmerkelijk is het dat
hij wordt voorgedragen, aangezien hij al 14 (!) bestuursfuncties
bekleed in verschillende stichtingen en commissies die
met name met kunst en cultuur te maken hebben.
Zijn hoofdfunctie op dit moment is directeur van het
Concertgebouw. Martijn Sanders ziet het als taak de
AVRO te verdedigen als onderdeel van het publieke bestel,
zo dat de AVRO beter gewaardeed kan worden door
de mensen.
MEERDERHEID VOOR 3 NETTEN OOK NA 2000
Een meerderheid van de 2e kamer wil dat er na 2000
3 televisienetten beschikbaar blijven voor de publieke
omroepen. CDA, PvdA en D66 vinden het absoluut
nodig dat de publieke omroep ook na het jaar 2000
over 3 netten beschikt.
"Het is een enorme vergissing te denken dat 2 netten
goedkoper zijn dan 3. Ook is het onzin om in het
enorme TV aanbod het publieke bestel terug te brengen
tot 2 netten", zegt het D'66 2e kamerlid M. de Koning.
De VVD vindt 2 netten "het maximaal haalbare" aldus
mediaspecialist Van Heemskerck. Het kabinet
heeft nog geen standpunt ingenomen. Deze week behandelt
de 2e kamer de omroepplannen van staatssecretaris Nuis.
THE BOX STAPT NAAR DE RECHTER
Doordat The Box door kabelexploitant A 2000 niet wordt doorgegeven
op de Hilversumse kabel heeft The Box tegen A 2000
een kort geding aangespannen. A 2000 gaf The Box
vorige week donderdag 4 uur lang door, waarna deze
weer verdween, tegen de afspraken in. Volgens The Box
zijn er afspraken gemaakt, dat The Box in Hilversum
doorgegeven moet worden. Aldus A 2000 was de uitzending
een test.
NOS DIRECTEUR HERKOZEN IN EBU TELEVISIE COMMISSIE
NOS Directeur Radio en Televisie Ruurd Bierman is voor een periode van
twee jaar herkozen als lid van de Televisie Commissie van de EBU: de
European Broadcasting Union. Dit gebeurde tijdens de jaarlijkse algemene
vergadering van televisie-directeuren in Duitsland.
De publieke omroeporganisaties in Europa hebben veel overeenkomstige
belangen. De EBU behartigt deze al sinds 1950, aanvankelijk met als
voornaamste doel het vinden van oplossingen voor juridische en technische
problemen. Tegenwoordig echter staat de EBU haar leden bij op allerlei
denkbare terreinen, van de uitwisseling van nieuws en programma's tot advies
en informatie over de jongste ontwikkelingen in de totale audiovisuele sector.
Om dit optimaal te kunnen doen wordt met commissies gewerkt, waarin
deskundige afgevaardigden zitting hebben.(Bron: NOS)
GRATIS VOICEMAIL PTT TELECOM UITGESTELD
PTT Telecom heeft het plan om alle telefoonabonnees
te voorzien van een gratis voicemaildienst tot onbepaalde datum
is uitgesteld. Minister Jorritsma van Verkeer en Waterstaat
had bezwaren geuit tegen de dienst, vanwege
misbruik van een dominante marktpositie, en zal overleg
voeren met Enertel en Telfort, de 2 telecombedrijven
die per 1 juli telefonie over vaste lijnen mogen aanbieden,
naast PTT Telecom. PTT Telecom heeft laten weten
dat nadat minister Jorritsma haar standpunt, dat medio juni
verwacht wordt, bekend heeft gemaakt, ze bekend
zal maken wanneer de voicemail zal starten.
Overigens wil de Vereniging van Internetproviders
de plannen van 'Het Net' (waarbij alle klanten van PTT Telecom
in eerste instantie zowat een half jaar gratis E-Mail krijgen en Nederlandse
Internet toegang) aanhangig maken bij de Europese Commissie.
DUTCHMEDIA GOES DR.DISH@TV
DutchMedia ook op TV! Vanaf komende
vrijdag is DutchMedia ook bij Dr. Dish@TV
(hèt programma voor schotelliefhebbers) te zien,
voor schotelbezitters. Iedere 2e vrijdag van de maand,
zal David de Jong verslag doen van de meest opmerkelijke
medianieuwtjes van dat moment in het Nederlands.
De planning is dat om ca. 20:10 DutchMedia zal worden
uitgezonden. Dr. Dish@TV is iedere 2e vrijdag
van 20:00 tot 23:00 uur te ontvangen via de
Kopernikus DFS 2 satelliet (28,5 graden Oost),
11.548 GHz. Verticaal (Transponder b1), audio op
6.65 MHz.

MICROSOFT BUYS WEB TV, PROPOSES TV STANDARDS
Now that the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has decreed the
introduction of digital TV by 2006, computer companies come up with their
(sometimes pretty weird) ideas of what television will look like in the
future.
Software giant Microsoft Corp. has agreed to acquire privately-held WebTV
Networks Inc. for cash and stock valued at about US$425 million. The
Gates company said hopes the move will help it become a leader in the new
frontier of digital television where consumers can enjoy better pictures,
enhanced programming, Internet access and video and data feeds on their
televisions. [Almost everything of this is either untrue or simply not
wanted by most viewers. Originally regarded a super seller, Web-TV
devices dramatically flopped during the last Christmas shopping season.]
The deal marks Microsoft's biggest investment in the Internet to date.
The company also announced that the next releases of the Microsoft
Windows and Windows NT operating systems will enable PCs to receive video
and digital data from existing satellite, cable and terrestrial broadcast
sources. Not really, you have to buy some additional hardware: "The
enabling hardware for this technology is expected to add a nominal amount
to the cost of PCs," Microsoft added in a press release.
Simultaneously, Microsoft has in co-operation with Intel Corp. and Compaq
Computer Corp. proposed standards for a new generation of television
sets. According to the companies involved, their proposal would allow a
"significant improvement" in picture quality as well as transmission of
related information and data to personal computers, television and hybrid

IBM UNVEILS DIGITAL TV PLANS
Of course, Microsoft does not hold the exclusive right to err. IBM
announced LogiCast, a solution [what problem does it solve, by the way?
-- Ed.] that combines all of the technologies and services needed to
implement digital broadcasting of both video and data. With LogiCast,
broadcasters, satellite service providers, cable and telephone companies
can create new services and lower costs today while building on their
existing infrastructure to move, incrementally, into digital
broadcasting, IBM said in -- what else -- a press release.
"The conversion of video from analog to digital formats is accelerating
around the world, enabling new revenue-generating broadcast services
through greater channel capacity, as well as improving video and audio
quality," said Dr. William H. Beckmann, vice president, IBM Video Enabled
Solutions. The press release did not state whether he showed any kind of
emotion while lying about the video and audio quality, which actually
decreases when signals get digitally compressed.
[One may not note any difference, although I do in most cases. Just have
a look a the analogue distribution of the new German service Phoenix via
ASTRA. The feed is clearly taken from the channel's digital distribution.
The digital protagonists so far claimed that digital TV was at least as
good as a home video recording, but they have been proven wrong. The
Phoenix signal, for instance, is even worse than what my very first
camcorder used to record, and that was just 200 horizontal lines. My
current Panasonic S-VHS-C camcorder produces much better pictures than
every digital channel I've had the misfortune to watch so far. Believe or
not, signals simply cannot get any better be omitting allegedly
superfluous information, however digital they may be. Anybody who claims
that is either totally ignorant or a slick liar. -- Ed.]
Okay, I have to get back to IBM somehow. They claim to be active in
Europe, actually. Stream, a multimedia group formed by Italy's
telecommunications company STET, has IBM as general contractor and
systems integrator. IBM says it provided a complete digital video
broadcasting solution which includes over 2,000 components from
themselves and 40 suppliers. The cable-based system has been serving
Stream customers since September 1996.
